Principal's Corner

July 2020

Dear East Brainerd Elementary Families,

It is with great excitement that I write this letter of introduction to you as the new Principal of East Brainerd Elementary.  I am honored to lead a school with such amazing students, a committed staff, and a resilient school community.  I feel very fortunate to become part of a community that has already given me such a warm welcome! I can only imagine the challenges you have faced with the tornado damage and ending the school year during COVID-19. As August approaches, I look forward to the hope and joy children will bring with them to school this year.

This summer, I have devoted myself to building relationships and familiarizing myself with the goals, school culture, successes, and opportunities for East Brainerd Elementary. In addition, I am preparing for our temporary transition to the East Hamilton Middle campus.  During the coming school year, I will spend time with your children, getting to know their personalities, learning styles and interests. As a learning community, we will celebrate their successes--small and large. I will encourage them every day and let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school.

I am a native of Chattanooga and a product of area public schools. (I graduated from Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences). Motivated by my positive experiences in school, I hold a bachelor’s, master’s, and specialist degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. This past May, I received an additional education specialist degree from Carson Newman University where I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree. Professionally, I have been serving in the field of education for more than twenty years. I have worked with students ranging in age from birth through twelfth grade in a variety of roles. I have been an exceptional education teacher (gifted), a school psychologist, and an assistant principal within Hamilton County Schools. Most recently, I served as principal of Battle Academy and elementary director for the Opportunity Zone.   I am proud of what was accomplished as a leader in my recent positions and look forward to many celebrations and accomplishments while serving at East Brainerd Elementary.

But my greatest achievement comes not professionally, but personally, as I am the mother of a wonderful son, Rudy.  I often say that I treat all children in my school as if they were my own. Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible experiences while at East Brainerd Elementary.  Every day, I will communicate and model high expectations for teaching and learning.

Indeed, my passion has been and always will be educating students. With that in mind, you can expect that I will work diligently with teachers to make sure our students are exposed to curriculum and instruction that is both engaging and challenging. I view education as a lifelong process and expect that I will continue to learn and seek professional growth as principal of East Brainerd Elementary. Most importantly, I believe that students are at the center of all school-related decisions. I am eager to unite my experience, willingness to learn, and child-centered approach to support our students.  Because the relationships between families and the school are imperative to the success of our students, I welcome your support, feedback and involvement.

Once again, I am so thankful and thrilled to bring my skills as an educational leader to East Brainerd Elementary and to work with you as a partner in education to ensure your child's success. I look forward to getting to know you and your children. I will be working most days this summer to ensure for a smooth transition and opening in August. Please watch for updates and announcements regarding the opening of school during this unprecedented time. Things are ever changing on the account of the impact of COVID-19 in our community and I will continue to work with the school system to advocate for your child. When you receive communication that school is open to students and visitors, please stop by to say hello.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Sincerely,

Ms. Saunya Goss, EdS

Principal
